It is important to consider the culture, community background, and life experiences of all the clients we serve. The resources below provide guidance on practicing TMH with clients from different backgrounds.
Cultural Responsiveness Resources
- These TF-CBT implementation manuals provide guidance on implementing TF-CBT with specific populations, including youth with developmental disabilities, African American youth, LGBTQ youth, youth from military families, and youth who have experienced commercial sexual exploitation
- The Hispanic/Latino Behavioral Health Center of Excellence provides resources and training specifically focused on integrating cultural considerations into mental health services, including telehealth.
- The Asian American Psychological Association (AAPA) offers resources and guidelines for culturally sensitive mental health care, which can be applied to telemental health.
- The IHS Telebehavioral Health Center of Excellence (TBHCE) Telebehavioral Health Program provides direct, ongoing care via televideo to patients of all ages at IHS/Tribal/Urban Indian operated facilities across the country. The TBHCE’s Step-By-Step Guide for Setting Up Telebehavioral Health Services offers comprehensive information related to setting up TMH programs serving American Indian/Alaska Native communities.
- The article Honoring Children, Mending the Circle: Cultural Adaptation of Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for American Indian and Alaska Native Children introduces an adaptation of TF-CBT for American Indian and Alaska Native (AI/AN) children. Honoring Children, Mending the Circle (HC-MC) guides the therapeutic process through a blending of AI/AN traditional teachings with cognitive-behavioral methods. The authors introduced the HC-MC treatment and illustrated its therapeutic tools by way of a case illustration
- HHS.gov has published several telehealth best practice guides, including a guide focused on telehealth for rural areas and another focused on telehealth for American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
