Training
There are many ways clinicians can familiarize themselves with best practices in TMH delivery. One common question is “Do I need to be certified in TMH delivery?” The answer is that it really depends on what makes you feel most comfortable. Certification is not required to deliver TMH services, but some clinicians feel investing in a certification program is worth it. There are also less-intensive and lower cost trainings and webinars that cover common issues related to TMH delivery. Below are some resources we recommend.
Training and Best Practice Resources
- Telebehavioral Health – What Every Provider Needs to Know – This SAMHSA webinar from 2018 provides a helpful overview of general telehealth practice and addresses legal, ethical, clinical, and technical issues.
- Telehealth.org – Telehealth.org offers on-demand telehealth training with CEs, certificate training programs, telebehavioral health consulting, and telehealth newsletters. The site provides three different certification options to help those looking to start, assess or enhance their telemental health practice. Relevant on-demand trainings include Trauma-Informed Child & Pediatric Telehealth Training and Pediatric Telemedicine, Telehealth, & Teletherapy: Practicing with Children & Adolescents.
- Telehealth Outreach Program at the Medical University of South Carolina – The Telehealth Outreach Program (TOP) at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) is a collaborative effort to increase access to evidence-based trauma-focused mental health treatments for children and adolescents through telehealth technology. The TOP offers free webinars, research, and downloadable resources for clinicians in both English and Spanish.
- TeleBehavioral Health Training from The University of Washington Training, Workforce, & Policy Innovation Center – The TeleBehavioral Health training series is intended to provide free, comprehensive, practical and up-to-date information and guidance for providing standard of care telebehavioral health services. You can view past presentations or register for live webinars. For the live webinars, National Association of Social Workers CEUs can be provided at no cost. You can also download their TeleMental Health Guides for Infancy to Young Adults.
- NCA Engage – Telehealth and telemental health resources for CACs – The National Children’s Aliance (NCA) has compiled this library of resources related to telemental health delivery at CACs, including telehealth explainer videos, fact sheets, and tip sheets for both caregivers and therapists. NOTE: To access some of these resources, you will need an NCA Engage account. Instructions on creating an NCA Engage account can be found here.
- Telehealth Guidance Document: Considerations When Referring for In-Person or to Telehealth (Condol, Herting, Stewart, 2021) – This document was developed as a resource for the clinical team to consult as they explore whether conducting trauma treatment via telehealth is a good fit for a specific client.
- How to Join Your Telehealth Session – This document from TheraNest provides tips for successfully connecting to a TMH session.
- TMH Best Practice Guides – The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as developed several different TMH best practice guides, including a guide focused on telehealth for rural areas and another focused on telehealth for American Indian and Alaska Native communities.
